The Boaz City Council voted to change two types of business licensing fees during a meeting Monday night.
After the owner of a local tattoo parlor in Boaz requested a lower business license fee earlier this year, the council voted Monday to change the fee from $1,200 per year to $500 per year for tattoo parlors and body piercing shops.
Additionally, the council had received another request from a local apartment complex owner to change the fee structure for apartments. The city formerly charged a flat rate of $300 for all apartment complexes, regardless of size. Monday, they voted to change the fee structure to be based on gross receipts.
Library donation
One Boaz native dedicated herself to furthering the Boaz Public Library, even after her death.
Mayor Tim Walker recognized the late Marjorie Stephens during Monday’s council meeting for leaving $10,000 to the library in her will.
Stephens served on the library board from 1973 to 1983 and was responsible for writing the library’s constitution and by-laws. She was instrumental in the library’s growth from inside a building at Snead State Community College to a local storefront to its former location beside the Boaz Police Department.
Stephens moved to Birmingham several years ago, but continued to show her support for the Boaz library by visiting the current facility when it opened in 2006, according to Librarian Lynn Burgess.
“I think maybe today she’s looking down and seeing what a great success the library has been,” Walker said.
Burgess said the donation was “a nice surprise.” She intends to use it to purchase a new sign for the library and, hopefully, start a children’s computer area. City leaders are also trying to work out a way to honor Stephens permanently at the library.
Departments close for holidays
Most Boaz city departments, except for fire and police, will be closed on Dec. 24-25 for Christmas and Jan. 1 for New Year’s.
December council meetings
The Boaz City Council adjusted the days of its meetings in December for Christmas.
The council normally meets on the second and fourth Monday of the month but will meet on the first and third Monday in December. As usual, the meetings will begin at 6 p.m. in the Boaz Senior Center.
Paying bills
The council approved several accounts payable vouchers for Nov. 7-25 totaling $485,783.24. As always, the vouchers are posted for public view in the foyer of City Hall.
