How to get involved

The following is a list of agencies, companies and organizations where citizens can donate items to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The list also contains important information for evacuees and their families.
• FEMA: affected individuals in declared counties can register online for disaster assistance at www.fema.gov or call FEMA’s toll-free registration line at 1-800- 621-3362. Victims are encouraged to register online due to the possibility of high call volume. If registering by phone, owners of commercial properties and residents with only minor losses are urged to wait a few days before calling so those whose homes were destroyed or heavily damaged can be served first. Phone lines are open 24 hours, seven days a week.
• State of Alabama: Gov. Riley has created the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund to help meet the needs of residents not covered by insurance or FEMA claims. The fund will be managed by the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and the United Way of Alabama will serve as the fiscal agent. Contributors may send checks made payable to the “Alabama Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund” to Alabama Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund, PO Box 6135, Montgomery, AL 36106. Additional info may be obtained by calling 1-877-273-5018 or logging on to www.servealabama.gov.
• Alabama Realtors: the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA ask realtors to develop inventories of housing available to evacuees. Some short-term, some long-term. Rental/purchase costs of each property are expected for each property submitted. Click on the attachment and submit information via the template to private.sector(at)dhs.gov. Further information or donations can be made by going to www.alabamarealtors.com and clicking on the FUND links.
• City of Albertville: city hall, the board of education and the chamber of commerce, in conjunction with the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, are accepting contributions/donations of any of the items listed below. Items will be accepted between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. until Sept. 10. Items should be dropped off at the Walker Warehouse building, which is located on Sand Mountain Drive, next door to Foodland in Albertville. The Red Cross will collect and deliver the items to the disaster area. Bottled water, baby wipes, soap, shampoo, paper towels, Kleenex, gloves, non-perishable snack foods, diapers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, towels, bath cloths, trash bags, blankets. Letters were also distributed to all parents of Albertville City schoolchildren Friday.
• Albertville Elementary: via the Red Cross, items will be collected until Sept. 9 in the front lobby of the school. Cub Scout pack 171 will be helping disburse the items to the Red Cross. Items include those similar to the list provided by the city of Albertville.
• Compass Bank: offering a matching donation of up to $250,000 to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Donations may be made in any branch of Compass, with checks or money orders made payable to the American Red Cross. Donations will be accepted through Oct. 1. Compass will also provide disaster relief loans to those residents who live in Alabama and Florida counties FEMA has designated as disaster areas. Components of the program include discounted rates on consumer and small business loans, deferred payments on existing consumer and small business loans, lines and credit cards, loan payment late fee forgiveness and penalty-free CD withdrawals.
• LifeSouth: Blood donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds or more. For more information about donation locations and times, please visit www.lifesouth.org or call 1-888-795-2707. Albertville’s donor center can be contacted at 256-894-6066.
• First Call for Help: if you are seeking information on friends or family, be sure to have their name, address and county in which they reside and call 1-800-936-HELP or 582-0506. You may also call local Marshall County Auxiliary Radio Service (MCARS) member Randy Cox, who through his HAM radio operation has volunteered to assist by contacting other HAM radio operators in the disaster regions. His number is 558-1949. You can also call United Way or EMA at 571-7329 to have your request forwarded to Randy.
• MCARS: will be set up at the Boaz and Guntersville Wal-Mart Supercenters to take health and welfare inquiries beginning at 10 a.m. today and tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 4.
• The American Red Cross: is accepting checks, earmarked for “Hurricane 2005 Relief” to PO Boax 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013. In Marshall County, the Red Cross is accepting donations by calling 593-0115. The Madison/Marshall County Chapter of the American Red Cross will be open for contributions during the Labor Day weekend today from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday from noon to 4:30 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Huntsville office is located at 1101 Washington Street.
• The Alabama Department of Public Health: is utilizing all of its available resources to respond to Hurricane Katrina. Services routinely available at county health departments may be temporarily interrupted as the department responds to this enormous disaster. Residents should call the Marshall County Health Department at 582-8425 for further information on any scheduled changes or routine operations.
• State parks: Alabama’s state parks will house evacuees from the hurricane through FEMA. Lake Guntersville State Park has 364 modern campsites and 35 family cottage units available to those affected. FEMA is also supplying trailers that will serve as long-term housing to evacuees who register by calling 1-800-621-FEMA. Throughout the state, more 2,500 campsites and 350 rooms in lodges, chalets and cabins are available. Modern campsites have water and electrical hookups, and some have sewer hook-ups as well.
• The city of Boaz police and fire departments: took up money at this Friday night’s football game between Boaz and Pinson Valley. Cash donations will go to send a semi-trailer of gallons of distilled water to a site for relief efforts. This water is being drop shipped by the local Wal-Mart to the staging area as designated by the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. Checks can be made to the city of Boaz Hurricane Relief Fund. Donations can be given at Boaz City Hall. Additional funds will be given as directed by EMA.
• Mitchell Grocery: has teamed up with Johnson Giant Food in Gadsden and The Exchange Bank to take donations of food and money. The money will buy food at wholesale cost, and Mitchell Grocery will coordinate with the American Red Cross to send trucks to the Gulf Coast.
• First Baptist Church of Albertville and Mount Calvary Baptist Church: will be taking up money and items such as water, diapers, baby food, soap, shampoo and other personal items as well as blankets, pillows, towels and washcloths to aid First Baptist Church of Plaquemine, La., who are housing and caring for survivors migrating from New Orleans to their small town. Donations may be left at First Baptist Church of Albertville throughout the weekend and Monday. Mitchell Grocery and Jack Fricks will be carrying the items down Tuesday or Wednesday morning.
• Gary Waldrep’s Festival on the Farm: Sept. 9-10 has been designated an official drop-off for water, diapers, batteries, and cases of food (no single items please) to be taken the following week by Olen Morrison of the Boaz Fire Department.
• Crossville Town Hall: will serve as a drop-off point for supplies.
• The Marshall County Courthouse: will serve as a drop-off point for supplies.
• Jacksonville State University: extended fall registration for graduate and undergraduate students from Sept. 7 to Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m. For more information, go to JSU’s Web site at www.jsu.edu or call 1-800-231-5291.
• Jameson Inn: offering an extended stay rate to guests who are forced to stay more than a week; offering 60 minutes of free long distance to victims; negotiating complimentary meals with local restaurants or service organizations; engaging local social service providers to assist guests unable to afford lodging. • Fabco: of Albertville will begin accepting donations of supplies and money. In addition, Fabco has arranged for the donations to be delivered by trucks and drivers donated by the company.
• Farm Bureau Insurance: in Guntersville, located at 456 Gunter Avenue, is accepting donations of towels, bath cloths, blankets, pillows, cleaning supplies, diapers, baby wipes, lotions and soap. Items may be dropped off at the above location or call 582-1453 to arrange for them to be picked up.
• State Treasurer Kay Ivey: announced that up to $25 million will be available through the Linked Deposit Program to assist Alabama banks in making emergency interim loans to disaster victims statewide. Individuals and businesses interested in securing an emergency loan should make application with their local bank. The bank will evaluate the loan based on its own lending criteria. If the loan receives bank approval, the bank may forward a request to the State Treasury for a linked deposit. For more information, please contact the State Treasurer’s Office at 334-242-7500.
• Marshall County Veterans Affairs: office in Guntersville asks that if there are any evacuees in Marshall County that need assistance pertaining to their VA benefits, please contact Rhonda Tidmore at 571-7761.
• The Marshall County Economic Development Council: asks that any business with job openings that could be filled by evacuees or anyone with apartments or houses normally for rent that could be used long-term by evacuees to call 582-5100.
• All three Crown Kia locations: Rainbow Drive in Gadsden, Highway 35/I59 in Fort Payne and Quintard Avenue in Anniston, are now accepting donations for the Red Cross from Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Non-perishable food and checks made payable to the Red Cross for Katrina victims and refugees in our area will be accepted.
