The Douglas Town Council is working with a consultant to find grants to purchase a new vehicle for the police department.
Mayor Paula Phillips told council members, she had met with Bill Rushton, out of Montgomery to find grants that would allow them to purchase a new car. Rushton works with the Economic Development Board in helping municipalities within Marshall County to find grants to help them purchase things needed for the city.
Phillips said the council is spending a lot of money fixing the old cars they have right now.
“Last month we spent, $1,900 on two of our cars and over $6,000 this last year on repairs and all,” Phillips said. “We need to retire the cars.”
According to Rushton, there is a grant that would allow them to purchase the vehicle. The grant would be administered through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
“The grant won’t be as much as it was last year but it will help,” Phillips said.
The grant through ADECA would be $12,000. According to Phillips a new car would run about $19,000, so the city would have to put some money with the grant.
Phillips told the council members she felt it would “be who of us to try to do this.”
