Sand Mountain Reporter State success From staff reports Published August 6, 2009 The ARPA State Swimming and Diving Championships took place July 23-25 in Cullman.Boaz finished an impressive seventh in the state. Only Madison, Scottsboro and Cullman finished ahead of Boaz in north Alabama. Many of the Boaz swimmers achieved their personal best times, and many team records were broken at state. Sam Bates, Makole Chamblee and Morgan Smith led the Barracudas in winning the most individual medals. Including relays, Bates won a total of six — three gold medals, one silver and two bronze. Smith grabbed five medals, including two gold medals, two silver and one bronze. The 11-and-12-year-old girls collected the most wins of any group on the team. They proved to be the strongest group of swimmers on the 2009 Barracudas.
