Lots of chances for you to get involved

Published February 4, 2010

A lot of good things are going on in Albertville right now that people should, at the least, check out, but they might want to actually get involved with some.

We’ve got the AHS Show Choir putting on its first choir competition this weekend and a group of people, including the Albertville Beautification Board, trying to clean up the city before hordes of people get here. The Christian Women’s Job Corps and Christian Men’s Job Corps just kicked off a new round of classes and they need mentors. The Albertville-Boaz Recycling Center just expanded its efforts into Douglas.

All of these groups mainly need one thing — people’s time.

Sometimes it is easier to write a check and move on from some causes, and I’m not discouraging anyone from making monetary donations. Those donations make these programs possible, but I am saying remember that somebody is going to have to take the next step and get involved.

Take the recycling center, for example.

Albertville and the surrounding communities have overwhelmingly responded to this effort making the program a huge success.

But, and there always seems to be a but, the problem is that pile of recyclables keeps pilling up and the center desperately needs people to help unpile them.

This is where people can make a difference by volunteering for an hour or even 30 minutes a week to help sort the pile.

Jeannie Courington, the center’s coordinator, said people don’t have to call, they just have to show up anytime Monday through Saturday between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

According to Linda Henry, from the Christian Women’s Job Corps, if anyone wants to be a mentor, they can call her at 878-3533.

These are just two opportunities to get involved. Nobody said they were simple or easy, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth doing.

Also, people might want to make a mental note or if you’re a fan of calendars you can write down the dates for Albertville’s Small Towns and Downtowns festival coming up July 1-3.

Right now, there are 30 people on seven different committees working to plan Albertville’s Small Towns and Downtowns celebration and it should be a pretty “big deal.”

You probably are not going to want to miss it, so save a few bucks and stay in town that weekend.
