Band, choral students cruise to year's end

Published March 30, 2006

Members of the Albertville High School marching band, jazz band and Centerstage! Show choir recently returned from their last big hurrah of the 2005-2006 school year.

The students took a five-day ride on Royal Caribbean’s Sovereign of the Seas to Nassau, Bahamas and Coco Cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. A total of 263 students and parents made the trip, which left on March 16 and returned on March 20.

“We just wanted to give them an experience they may not get to be a part of otherwise and give them the opportunity to play in a setting like a cruise ship,” said assistant band director Chris Lindley. “We were performing for passengers and other groups who wanted to watch.”

In all, seven high schools went on the cruise, including schools from Tennessee, New York and Kentucky.

And the students from Albertville had a great time of fun in the sun. For the seniors, it was one final time to perform the football halftime show.

“It was kind of a reality shock getting back and looking at all the pictures,” said Mallory Bishop, a senior on the dance line and saxophonist. “I realized it was the last trip with this group of people. It was the best so far, definitely.”

Senior trombone section leader Jake Turner agreed it was a great trip, having also accompanied the band to California in years past.

“There have been places I would have never have gotten to see, like the Bahamas and California, because of band,” Turner said. “It was a nice flashback to get to perform the halftime show again.”

Albertville Band Director Curtis Burttram said the trip was a great experience for the students, especially the seniors.

“It went very smooth,” Burttram said. “It accomplished several things, including exposing the kids to something like that for the first time in their lives.”

In addition to Lindley and Burttram, Choir Director Scott Rains, Missy Lindley, Alabama Avenue Middle School band director and Natasha Tidmore, AAMS choir director went on the cruise.

In addition to the cruise, the Albertville Aggie Band has been busy with competition. The Albertville Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and AAMS eighth-grade band all received superior ratings at the Alabama Bandmasters Association District Concert Band Festival in February.

The annual Miss Albertville Pageant, sponsored by the Albertville band boosters, will be Saturday, May 6. The pageant is open to students from K-12 who are currently enrolled in the Albertville City School System. For more information contact the band office at 891-6332.
