Ellis to discuss senior center

Published August 15, 2009

Albertville City Councilman Chuck Ellis is working to fulfill one of his campaign promises by finding a way to build a new senior center.

“One of the things I see daily when I go up there is the state of the senior center compared to some other places,” Ellis said.

He plans to ask Congressman Robert Aderholt to help with getting some funds to either renovate the senior center or build a new one.

He said he received a small reminder the other about the Albertville Senior Center, and what he said he was going to try to do while sitting on the council.

“I came in from work the other day and there was a newspaper from Cherokee County laying on my desk at home and there is a picture for the ground breaking for the new senior center in Centre.”

He said that the people who use the center in Albertville have a hard time understanding why other communities around Alabama are getting new senior centers, and Albertville is not.

“It hurts because my mom works there, and all these folks they see that other cities, much smaller than Albertville – you know Albertville has got 25,000 people at least – and you’ve got Douglas who just got a new one, and Arab got a new one, Guntersville has that Taj Mahal down there, and then Boaz.”

Ellis estimated it would cost between $500,000 to 600,000 to build a new center.

“I know the funding is there,” Ellis said. It is just a matter being persistent about it and having the passion for this greatest generation to get them the funding for the senior center.”
