Area cancer patients can take advantage of free yoga classes at Powerhouse Gym & Family Fitness Center in Albertville.
“We are reaching out to all cancer patients in Marshall County and the surrounding areas,” said Anne Sweitzer, sales manager at Powerhouse. “We want our members and community to know that we are not here only to work out and build muscle, but we are also a member of the caring community and want to do our part by extending our services to those in need of some pain relief due to a health challenge.”
Classes are every Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m.
“We ask that each participant get written permission from their doctor to attend the classes,” Sweitzer added.
Yoga is exercise but also incorporates meditative and breathing techniques.
“A lot of people assume that yoga’s a flexibility issue,” said Selah Rhoden, a yoga instructor at Powerhouse.
“Really, yoga’s about connecting the mind to the body. For a lot of cancer patients, they’re going through a hard time. They have stress and a lot of anxiety they can’t control. So yoga, in that sense, helps to just give them the time to calm down.
“It’s a time of peace for their body and a little bit of relaxation. Of course, it helps building strength, balance and flexibility.”
