SARDIS CITY — The Sardis Lions built a 10-0 first-quarter lead en route to a 55-35 triumph over Etowah County rival Hokes Bluff on Tuesday at Sardis Gym.
The Lions (2-2) were in front 20-14, 35-22 and 45-27 at the rest stops.
Sardis limited the Eagles to 13 second-half points.
“We played defense, and I was proud to see that kind of defense,” said Sardis head coach Tracy Cheek. “We need to carry that over into area play.
“We’re getting better every game. It was the best we’ve played overall.”
Sardis held Hokes Bluff to 11-of-40 shooting from the field, including just 2-of-20 beyond the 3-point arc.
Cheek saluted Jeremy East for his defensive effort against Hokes Bluff’s Cole Frederick.
Frederick scored 11 first-quarter points, but East limited him to six the remainder of the contest.
“Jeremy was giving up five inches in height to Frederick, but he guarded him the last three quarters,” Cheek said.
Cody Gardner compiled 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals for Sardis.
Brandon Walter finished with 15 points and 10 boards.
“Brandon was sick but he played well,” Cheek said.
East scored six points, Sean Brehm five, both Jerryn Harris and Paton Jones four and Tylor White and Aaron Champion three each.
Brehm added seven rebounds and three steals.
Sardis converted 13-of-29 2-point field goals and 5-of-14 treys. The Lions hit 14-of-19 free throws.
Sardis will play Hokes Bluff this afternoon at 2 p.m. in the West End Thanksgiving Tournament at Walnut Grove.
The Lions begin Class 3A, Area 13 play Tuesday at Susan Moore.
