Trees, power lines tumble down

Published December 10, 2009

Downed trees knocked out most of the power to about 3,000 Marshall-DeKalb Electric Cooperative customers during a windy and rain-soaked Tuesday night.

Most M-DEC customers had power returned by 5 a.m. Wednesday with only about 100 outages reported at 11 a.m., M-DEC spokesman Scott Bobo said.

Areas in Boaz, Crossville, Nixon Chapel and Oak Hill were affected.

“Most of our lines are energized,” Bobo said. “It's mostly just service work right now."

Sustained wind gusts of 23 mph and an average of 2.24 inches of rain were recorded in Albertville on Tuesday night.

The Municipal Utilities Board in Albertville reported scattered outages affecting roughly between 500 and 600 customers.

MUB General Manager Elden Chumley said a portion of a tree knocked out part of a line on Whitesville Road around midnight, but workers restored power by 1 a.m.

A Marshall County Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman said the agency received no reports of injuries or structural damage.

“We didn’t really have any reports other than trees and power lines down,” the spokeswoman said.

Staff writer Jonathan Stinson contributed to this report.
