GADSDEN – Two Etowah County men have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a Sardis High School student.
Nathaniel Wayne Lee, 19, of 1176 Littleton Cut-off Road, Attalla, and Troy Andrew Smiley, 22, of 1084 Anna Drive, Attalla, have been served with warrants and are being held in the Etowah County Detention Center.
No bond was set.
Stone had been missing since March 24, and it’s believed he was killed that day. Stone was fatally shot.
Investigators received a new lead Tuesday morning that pointed them to a shallow grave on a logging road, Sheriff Todd Entrekin said. He said evidence at that site prompted investigators to obtain a search warrant for a home not far from where Stone lived with his father and stepmother, Jeff and Lynn Stone.
Entrekin said it appears the boy was killed and buried in the shallow grave and was moved within the last week to a chest-type freezer in the home. He said investigators are still trying to determine why the body was moved.
An autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death, Entrekin said. Experts with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences will have to confirm the identity of the remains.
