Death penalty sought

Published December 12, 2006

Geontae Glass’ mother has been charged with capital murder.

Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp, in a news conference Monday afternoon, said, “After reviewing the evidence in this case, it will be presented to a jury by our team of prosecutors. I am convinced Shalinda Glass played an important role in the death of her son and the subsequent cover-up of the crime.

“It is going to take an Etowah County jury to convince me otherwise.”

Police in Etowah County arrested Shalinda Glass last week after an alleged kidnapping hoax Dec. 4, in which she said her car — with 5-year-old son Geontae inside — was stolen from an Albertville convenience store.

Police launched a search across the South, with an Amber Alert urging citizens to be on the lookout for the missing car. However, it is now believed the boy was dead all along and his body was in the trunk of the car before it was reported stolen.

Harp is seeking the death penalty because, he said, he believes the evidence supports the charge.

Glass was arrested early Dec. 5 at her Rainbow City apartment, along with her boyfriend, Kevin Towles.

Towles was charged last week with capital murder. Glass was charged originally with hindering prosecution.

The car was found in a Shady Grove garage owned by Towles early on the morning of Dec. 5.

“Every child deserves the protection of the justice system, and I plan to make every effort to see that justice is carried out in this case,” Harp said in a statement from his office.
