The Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division granted a nonprofit anti-litter group permission to post monofilament fishing line recyclers at 10 sites in Marshall County.
“We’re trying to educate the public about these recyclers, so when people see them at the various sites they'll know they are for monofilament and are not trash receptacles,” said Jeannine Wilder, of Marshall County People Against a Littered State. “Marshall County PALS is hoping that these recyclers will help to eliminate monofilament litter from the lake, thus enhancing the environment and anything that could be entangled in it.”
The recyclers are made of PVC and are receptacles for anglers’ “birds nests,” or tangled fishing line. Volunteers and employees of various agencies will clean out the recyclers at least twice per month. The collected monofilament will then be recycled into structures that attract fish.
The recyclers are located at the following boat ramps: TVA Dam, Preston Island, Honeycomb, Lake Guntersville State Park, Rayford Tucker (East Lake), John Stewart Jr. (Alabama 69), Bucky Howe Park, Steel Ford Park, Fire and Rescue Ramp adjacent to the Holiday Inn, and Mountain Lakes Resort.
Most monofilament fishing line isn’t biodegradable and can last hundreds of years in the environment. It’s also a hazard to wildlife because birds and other animals can get entangled in it.
