The Alabama Senate approved Rep. Frank McDaniel’s House bill creating an electronic database to track sales of pseudoephedrine products.
The bill passed the Senate on Tuesday and goes to the governor for his signature.
The measure requires retailers to enter the identifying information of people who purchase over-the-counter, nonprescription ephedrine or pseudoephedrine products into an electronic database prior to the sales.
A 2005 bill, also sponsored by McDaniel, removed such specific cold medicines from over-the-counter availability. The resulting limitations on the products severely handicapped the manufacturing of crystal methamphetamine, according to numerous reports from law enforcement agencies.
We applaud McDaniel for continuing this fight for all of us.
