More charges possible

Published November 2, 2006

A teenager alleged to have raped his mother is a suspect in another Alabama rape and is being looked at as part of the investigation into another sexual abuse case.

WAFF in Huntsville reported Gary D. Helms Jr., whom Albertville police charged last week with allegedly raping his mother, is the suspect in the alleged rape of a 16-year-old female in Lauderdale County.

The Huntsville television station reported Lauderdale County sheriff’s Chief Investigator Travis Clemons said Helms was working as a ride operator during a recent Oktoberfest held at St. Florian Park near Florence.

During this event, Helms is alleged to have raped the young girl, and since then has issued threats to her.

According to Clemons, his department had been looking for Helms for several weeks.

Helms’ arrest by Albertville police provided the break Clemons had hoped for.

According to Albertville Detective Capt. Mike Rice, the Lauderdale Sheriff’s Department has expressed interest in speaking with Helms.

Marshall County Sheriff Mac Holcomb confirmed to The Sand Mountain Reporter Wednesday his investigators are interested in Helms’ possible involvement in a sexual abuse case now under investigation.

According to Holcomb, the 4-year-old female victim named Helms as the person who abused her. Holcomb said investigators questioned Helms, who refuted the charges.

Holcomb said evidence will be presented to a grand jury.

Albertville police last week said the incident here allegedly took place after an argument Helms had with his brother over a female friend.

Helms, 19, of Albertville, remained in the Marshall County Correctional Facility this week. He is being detained on a $100,000 bond.
