Boaz finalizes 2010-11 football schedules

Published November 14, 2009

Neighborhood rival Sardis will return to Boaz’s football schedule for the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Boaz head coach Drew Noles finalized the Pirates’ new schedule this week, following the reclassification announced last week by the AHSAA.

The Pirates’ region — Class 5A, Region 7 — didn’t change, which helped expedite Noles’ scheduling process.

Guntersville and Alexandria will join Sardis as Boaz’s non-region opponents.

The Pirates and Sardis haven’t played since Oct. 30, 2003, when Boaz sailed to a 48-7 victory.

BHS leads the series 36-16-4. The two teams first played in 1937.

Boaz’s region foes will be Albertville, Arab, Etowah, Fort Payne, Southside, Scottsboro and Madison County.

The Pirates finished 6-1 in Region 7 in 2009, earning a share of the program’s first region championship. Boaz’s region loss came to co-champion Fort Payne.

BHS posted a 7-3 overall record.

“We feel like it’s a tough schedule and one that’s going to be competitive each week, and the thing about our region is every week you’ve got to come to play,” Noles said.

“Then when you throw teams like Guntersville, Alexandria and Sardis, who all three made the playoffs this year, on there, we think every week is going to be tough.

“We’re excited to get it finalized and get 10 games on the schedule.

“This year we feel like the off week probably helped us a little bit as far as getting well, but guys work to play 10 games and you want to be able to do that, and we just weren’t able to work that out this past year.”

Boaz played only nine regular-season games in 2009.

The Pirates faced R.A. Hubbard in week 10 in 2008, but Hazlewood closed and consolidated with Hubbard, and Hubbard chose to play Brooks — the week 10 opponent on Hazlewood’s 2008 schedule — in its 2009 finale.

“There’s some rival games (on the schedule),” Noles said.

“Us and Etowah have been great games the last few years, and that’s developed into I guess more of a friendly rivalry. They’re only 12 miles from us.

“The Southside game has been really good games and had big impact. And look at us and Fort Payne the last two years. We beat them on the last play two years ago, and we miss a two-point conversion in the last minute this year.

“Knowing that Scottsboro has got most everybody back, they’ll be one of the favorites in the region.

“We played Alexandria the few years we were in a (4A) region with them, and the last game we played down there they beat us 30-27 in a game that just went back and forth all night long.

“Familiarity is a good thing in a schedule, and we were able to keep the region schedule exactly the same, which is good.”

Scottsboro will have a new coach, as Freddie Tidmore resigned Tuesday. He posted a 17-36 record in five years at the helm.

“The only thing I don’t like about our schedule is Guntersville and Albertville are both in the first three games,” Noles said.

“I’d rather have those spread out a little more because those games do mean so much. But overall, we’re just glad to be finished with it.”

The Pirates have won a school-record seven consecutive games against archrival Albertville.

Boaz has won five of the last seven meetings with Guntersville.
