Garmon credits Glencoe

Published November 10, 2009

SARDIS CITY — Sardis head coach Chris Garmon usually cuts to the chase when assessing his team’s performance, and he didn’t veer from that course following Friday’s 39-14 loss to Glencoe in the Class 3A state playoffs.

“We physically got whipped up front and didn’t do a very good job tackling,” Garmon said.

“You’ve got to give them a lot of credit. They were a better football team tonight than we were.”

Senior quarterback Brock Kirby paced the Yellow Jackets, passing for 166 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 69 and a score.

Tim Chunn led Glencoe rushers with 124 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns, including a 97-yard scoring sprint.

“We had to put nine and 10 up there in the box to try and stop the run,” Garmon said.

“Our defensive backs didn’t play very well, and they made some good throws and good catches. You’ve got to give them credit.”

Glencoe built a 33-0 lead, but Sardis bounced back to score a pair of touchdowns and continued to battle until the final horn.

“Our kids played hard and they played the whole game, and you’ve got to give them credit for that,” Garmon said. “I know they’re disappointed and I am too.”

Sardis suffered a blow early in the game when it lost senior defensive tackle Brad Gaylor to an injury.

“That really hurt us because Brad Gaylor has been a playmaker for us all year long, and you lose him and we have to go to somebody else,” Garmon said.

“I didn’t think our linebackers played very well, but a lot of that has to do with Glencoe. They’ve got a good football team.”

Four other Lion starters were sidelined by injuries Friday night.

Injuries contributed to Sardis’ late-season slide, as the Lions dropped three of their last four games.

Sardis senior running back Josh Smith suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 2009 opener against Gaston.

Garmon praised the performances of sophomore Dylan Kelley and freshman Toby Pee, who took over for Smith.

“We played a lot of young guys, and we’ve got a lot of them coming back,” Garmon said. “It’s just been one of those years for injuries.”

Senior quarterback Kyle Garmon closed his career by completing 16-of-30 passes for 174 yards, including a 16-yard TD pass to Jonathan McBrayer. Garmon rushed 12 times for 65 yards and a score.

“Kyle is a good football player. We’ll miss him a lot,” Chris Garmon said of his son. “He did about everything for us.

“I thought he played extremely well, considering he plays on both sides of the ball and all the special teams too. I’m sure he got a little bit tired, but he’s played well for us all year long.”
