The mother of 5-year-old Geontae Glass and the woman’s boyfriend have been arrested in connection with the boy’s death.
Law enforcement officials say charges are pending against Kevin Andre Towles and Shalinda Kalika Glass. The two were arrested hours after the reported theft of Shalinda Glass’ car, with a sleeping Geontae inside, from the parking lot of an Albertville convenience store.
Now, police believe Geontae had died by the time of the theft outside the Conoco station on Baltimore Avenue and that the theft was a hoax.
The state issued an Amber Alert for Geontae after the reported kidnapping at 6:12 a.m., setting off a statewide search for the missing 1994 Nissan Altima.
The child’s body was discovered at about 2 a.m. today in the trunk of car Glass said was stolen. The car was in a garage at 1696 Shady Grove Road in Etowah County.
Etowah County Sheriff James Hayes said he believes Towles owns the Shady Grove Road residence.
Arrested at about 4 a.m. today were Towles, 31, of 604 Polk St., Gadsden, and Glass, 25, of 120 Doris St., Rainbow City.
“The investigation is continuing and other persons of interest are being interviewed this morning,” Hayes said. He said an autopsy will be performed.
He said the motive was unknown.
Marshall County District Attorney Steve Marshall and Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp met this morning in Gadsden to discuss charges.
