Albertville City Councilman Chuck Ellis made a plea to city leaders Monday night to pass a resolution to designate Kris Kobach, an immigration attorney, to represent the city and give Kobach the ability to initiate immigration litigation on the city’s behalf.
Ellis said he plans to have the resolution on the agenda for the council’s next meeting on Monday.
During his plea, Ellis referenced the campaign promises he made in 2008 when he was running for his seat on the council.
Ellis said that he promised to do something about the issue of illegal immigration.
He also said that a big difference between the present time and when he made those campaign promises is he has become more educated on the issue.
“I think that we have an excellent opportunity to receive council from a person that is renowned throughout the United States,” Ellis said.
“As I’ve said in talking with some of you, this is a person I’ve done a lot of studying on in the last few weeks.
“I know exactly what he brings to the table.”
Ellis said Kobach’s service would not cost the city any money and that it was important for the council to pass the resolution before Kobach is scheduled to speak in front of the council on March 22.
He said that if Kobach knew he had the council’s full support then he “could speak more candidly” with the council instead of making a “sales pitch.”
Ellis has planned out Kobach’s visit to Albertville, which in addition to speaking to the council, includes a luncheon in the BAE conference room at 11:30 a.m. on March 22.
The itinerary also includes a tour of the city, and a fly-over with Mayor Lindsey Lyons and Ellis, a meeting with Council members Diane McClendon, Randy Amos and other city leaders including Police Chief Benny Womac and Superintendent Ric Ayer.
Kobach is a University of Missouri – Kansas City law professor and a litigator who participated in the defense of ordinances in Hazleton, Pa., Farmers Branch, Texas, and Valley Park, Mo.
