David Hodges was named Alabama Association of Conservation Districts Farmer of the Year and was honored at AACD 63rd annual supervisors meeting held in Montgomery. The Marshall County Soil and Water Conservation District nominated Hodges for this award. He competed with farmers across the state for this title. Hodges farm is located in the Five Points area of Marshall County.
Hodges servers as chairman of the Sand Mountain Lake Guntersville Watershed Conservancy District.
Hodges has been recognized and given environmental awards for the outstanding conservation work that he has completed on his farm. He was awarded the Family Farm Environmental Excellence award and his farm was also among America’s 10 best environmental operations.
Alabama A&M University chose Hodges farm as one of the 23 sites to house their Soil Profile and Weather Monitoring Stations which measures soil moisture, temperature, rainfall and the movement of heat through the first few centimeters of topsoil.
Hodges participated in an RC&D demonstration project to install and operate a Rotary Drum Composter. He has hosted several educational gatherings and tours to demonstrate the composter for the Tennessee Valley RC&D Commission. He demonstrates how he uses Best Management Practices in managing his poultry litter or his farm and he hosted the RC&D Field Day to demonstrate an In-house Turner for poultry operations.
Hodges is a third generation poultry farmer. He has gotten the conservation message out into the community and made the citizens of Marshall County aware of the problems facing them today.
