Eagle Scout’s work beautifies area

Published April 11, 2009

GUNTERSVILLE — Marshall County residents will be better able to enjoy a section of the lake near Warrenton, thanks to Eagle Scout Edward Linker.

Linker took on the service project to complete Eagle Scout requirements for earning the top rank.

“The goal was to clean the area so the goals could walk and e able to get to the water. Me doing the project would save the school system money,” Linker said.

“There were trees down and dust all over the area. The tree is now gone, the dust is covered with gravel and we planted picnic tables and cleaned up the litter.”

Superintendent Tim Nabors praised Linker for his tireless efforts.

“I rode out by there and it looks really nice. We want to thank you for what you have done for our property down in Warrenton. You should be very proud,” he said.

In other business, board members learned for the 10th year in a row, the system’s bus fleet was free of any deficiencies during a state transportation department inspection.

“Of the 80 buses inspected, no buses were found to have any major deficiencies. The state average for major deficiencies for the last inspection year, 2008, was 3.1 percent,” wrote Joe Lightsey, director of the state transportation director in a report sent to county officials.

Board members also approved the 2009-10-school calendar, one Nabors characterized as being very similar to the current school year calendar.

School is set to begin for students on Aug. 10. Fall break is set for Oct. 19-23; Christmas holiday will be from Dec. 21 to Jan. 5; spring break will be March 15-19; and the final day for students will be May 27.

Nabors cautioned faculty and staff not to make any vacation plans just yet based on the calendar. Proposed legislation currently being debated may force schools not to open to students prior to Aug. 15, allowing for additional weeks of tourism in the state and bringing in additional tourism-related tax funds.

“If that legislation passes, it will impact fall break. If the legislation passes, we will have to make up five days, and there are five days right there we can use,” Nabors said.

The calendar is in sync with Guntersville and Arab school calendars. Albertville City Schools will open a little later than normal on Aug. 12 due to ongoing construction projects within the system. Boaz City Schools are aligned closer to Snead State Community College’s calendar due to the proximity to the college, Nabors said.

Board members approved several personnel actions.
