Volunteers are needed to help other people with their tax returns as part of the TCE/VITA tax counseling program sponsored by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), and the Internal Revenue Service.

All tax volunteers, who are comfortable working with numbers, will be trained to prepare basic tax returns during the free tax school the first two weeks in January 2019. The class will meet at RSVP Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., starting Jan. 7. Then volunteers, working in teams, will give a few hours each week during the tax season from February to mid-April providing free tax preparation for taxpayers who cannot afford professional tax help. At each tax site volunteers interview taxpayers to gather information for their tax return or they enter the data gathered into the computer.

Persons interested in participating in the income tax program should contact RSVP as soon as possible so training materials can be ordered. New volunteer training will be Nov. 28, 9 a.m. For more information, to register for the tax training and to volunteer as a tax assistor, call RSVP, 256-571-7734.
