In preparation for the upcoming school year, the Marshall County Board of Education (BOE) prepared a new policy to ensure the well being of students.

Marshall County BOE Superintendent Cindy Wigley, Ph.D., recommended for the board to approve the Marshall County Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP) Wellness Policy as presented by Casey Partain, CNP supervisor.

According to Partain, the BOE elected to approve the programs, practices and activities in the policy because of its “commitment to fostering healthy nutritional and physical activities that support student achievement and that promote the development of lifelong wellness practices.”

The policy stated that the Child Nutrition Program and the curriculum department would provide nutrition education to “foster lifelong habits of healthy eating.” It also stated that the schools would participate in available school meal programs, including the National School Breakfast Program, National School Lunch Program, grants as received and the Summer Food Service Program.

According to the policy, physical education opportunities would include the components of a “sound physical education program,” and physical education instruction would be “aligned with the curriculum.” It also stated that the BOE could “implement other programs that help create a school environment that conveys consistent wellness messages and that is conducive to healthy eating and physical activity.”

An interdisciplinary committee will meet annually to review and update the Marshall County School District Wellness Policy, according to the policy. It stated that Partain would be responsible for leading and organizing the Local Wellness Policy committee’s annual meeting. For more information or to participate in the development, review, update and implementation of the Local School Wellness Policy, call Partain at 256-582-7385.
