Vera Sue (Porch) Wright

Vera Sue Wright, 97, long-time Marshall County and Albertville resident, died on Sunday, December 8, 2019. She was born August 3, 1922 to Thomas Ruben and Annie Elizabeth Porch and was the ninth of 10 children. She was also the last surviving member of 42 Porch Family cousins. She married Cecil Wright in October 1937, and they enjoyed 68 years together until his death. Sue was preceded in death by her husband Cecil; mother and father; sister, Ruby; brothers, Rufus and Rupert; sister, Tempie; sister, Avice; brother, Hugh; brother, Bose; sister, Wynelle; sister, Annie Lou; and granddaughter, Terri Derrough.

Mrs. Wright is survived by her son, Bruce Wright (Carolyn); granddaughter, Karen Hangartner (Scott); great-grandchildren, Alan Hangartner (Carol Ann), Jonathan Hollis, Lawson Hangartner (Angelique), Haley Hangartner, Mary Caroline Derrough; and three great-great granddaughters.

She grew up in the Union Grove community during the Depression. In her words her “Daddy was a farmer (a good one) and they had plenty to eat and a good home. They didn’t have much else.” Sue lived in Ryan Crossroads, Asbury, Boaz and Albertville. In her younger days she was an excellent basketball player (jump center).

Sue had a career working in public education her entire life. She worked at Asbury Junior High School, then in the Albertville City School system at McCord Elementary School and Alabama Avenue Middle School. She positively affected the lives of many students in the Marshall County area. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church Albertville and loved her Dorcas Sunday School class. Sue grew beautiful flowers and plants that she continued to tend to at her assisted living home through this past Summer. She truly loved and cared for her entire family and it was a privilege to sit at her table and enjoy many delicious meals and conversations. She was a family caregiver for many years for her siblings and husband.

Our family would like to thank the staffs of Country Cottage Assisted Living, Huntsville Hospital Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and Hospice Family Care for their excellent and thoughtful care.

Adams Brown Service Funeral Home is entrusted to handle the arrangements. Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 pm on Thursday, 12 December at Adams Brown Service Funeral Home and the funeral service will follow at 2 pm. Burial will be in Memory Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Albertville or the Albertville City Schools Foundation.
