KIMBERLY — Keondrick Hankins scored three touchdowns to lead No. 9 Mortimer Jordan to a 41-14 win over Boaz on Friday in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
Mortimer Jordan improved to 9-2 and advanced to the second round to face Guntersville at Chorba-Lee Stadium. Boaz finished 4-7.
Boaz scored first on its second possession of the game. The Pirates used six plays to drive 63 yards, with the touchdown coming on a 26-yard pass from Easton Hardin to Eli Jacobs with 4:21 left in the first quarter. Gerardo Baeza added the point-after to give Boaz a 7-0 lead.
Mortimer Jordan tied the game with 9:34 left in the second quarter on a 4-yard run by Kourtlan Marsh, capping a six-play, 62-yard drive. Feriram Sanchez kicked the PAT to tie the game at 7.
Hankins scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 10-yard run with 7:06 left in the first half. It capped a short four-play, 39-yard drive. Sanchez added the point-after to push the lead to 14-7.
Mortimer Jordan increased the lead to 21-7 with 3:06 left in the half on a Garrett Helm 24-yard run. Sanchez again booted the point-after.
Boaz answered with a six-play, 81-yard touchdown drive to trim the lead to 21-14 at the half. The score came on a Hardin 27-yard pass to Quez Kelly. Baeza kicked the extra point.
Mortimer Jordan increased its advantage to 28-14 on the first possession of the second half. Hankins’ 5-yard run capped the drive.
Hankins’ third touchdown came on a 1-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Sanchez added the point-after to increase the Blue Devils’ margin to 35-14.
Mortimer Jordan’s final touchdown came when Foster Ragland recovered a fumble in the end zone. The fumble occurred when Austin Morris fumbled a pass from Marsh. The point-after failed.
Hankins finished the game with 94 yards rushing on 22 carries. Marsh completed 11-of-17 passes for 199 yards.
Hardin passed for 256 yards while completing 17-of-29 passes.
