Top-10 showdown

Justin Stiefel and his top-ranked Fyffe teammates will battle No. 6 Collinsville on Friday night in their first home game of the 2019 season. The Red Devils have won 31 consecutive home games. Fyffe hasn’t lost to Collinsville since 1983.

DeKalb County’s marquee matchup of the regular season takes place Friday night at Long-Ridgeway Stadium, when Class 2A, No. 1 Fyffe hosts No. 6 Collinsville in a Region 8 battle.

Kickoff is set for 7 in Fyffe’s home opener.

The unbeaten Red Devils are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Region 8 standings. Head coach Paul Benefield’s team outscored 3A, No. 10 Geraldine and Section a combined 77-0.

Collinsville enters the matchup at 3-0, 1-0, including victories over 3A Plainview and 5A Crossville. The Panthers have outscored their opponents 144-47.

Fyffe blasted Collinsville 54-24 a year ago, rallying from an early 10-0 deficit.

Senior quarterback Kaleb Jones is the Panthers’ star. He accounted for seven touchdowns in last week’s 54-28 drubbing of North Sand Mountain.

Jones rushed for 158 yards on 14 carries and scored on runs of 1, 2, 37, 1 and 37 yards. He was 5-of-9 passing for 112 yards and two scores.

Malachi Orr rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

The Red Devils are riding an 18-game winning streak against Collinsville, with eight of the victories during Benefield’s tenure. Five of Benefield’s eight wins have been by more than 40 points.

Collinsville’s last triumph in the series was a 14-0 decision in 1983.

The Red Devils extended their regular-season winning streak to 40 games by slamming Section 49-0. They lead the AHSAA with a 31-game home winning streak.

Fyffe used nine different ball carriers while rolling up 279 yards rushing against Section. Freshman Brodie Hicks led the Red Devils with 62 yards on seven carries.

Quarterback Zach Pyron threw only one pass, completing it to Malichi Mize for 25 yards.

The Red Devils’ defense limited Section to 15 yards total offense.

Fyffe has won 27 straight region games and is 19-3 in home openers under Benefield.

Benefield is going for his 240th win at Fyffe and his 285th overall Friday night. He is 239-42 at his alma mater and 284-53 overall.

He won 45 games at Sylvania from 1992-96.
