A single-vehicle crash in DeKalb County claimed a Boaz man's life Friday.

Alabama State Trooper Curtis Summerville said Yasin Escalante Ortiz, 24, was killed when the pickup truck he was riding in left the roadway. It hit a utility pole and struck several trees on DeKalb County Road 479, about 10 miles north of Boaz. The accident happened around 8 a.m., according to Summerville.

Ortiz, who was not using a seat belt, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene, Summerville said.

The driver of the vehicle, who Summerville said was also not wearing a seat belt, was ejected as well. Summerville said he was later transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the accident.
