A man was shot inside the Jackson County Courthouse on Wednesday morning.

According to Jackson County Sheriff Chuck Phillips, a man walked into the courthouse, located in Scottsboro, armed with a handgun on his side. After being refused entry by security deputies, Phillips said the man drew his weapon and was shot.

Medical attention was provided at the scene. The man was later transported to Huntsville Hospital — as of Wednesday afternoon, his status is unknown.

No other injuries were reported.

Phillips said the man’s name would not be released, as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) is investigating the shooting.

The courthouse closed for the remainder of Wednesday and is set to reopen Thursday.

Sheriff Chuck Phillips thanked all agencies that responded to the scene to assist, especially the Scottsboro Police Department, Scottsboro Fire Department and Highlands Ambulance Service.
