GUNTERSVILLE — Guntersville’s offense rolled up 543 yards Friday night in a 49-42 triumph over Madison County in the Wildcats’ 2019 home and Class 5A, Region 8 openers.
The Wildcats improved to 2-0 overall. They continue in Region 8 play this week when they travel to Scottsboro on Friday.
Guntersville led 14-7 after a quarter and 28-14 at intermission against Madison County. The Tigers stormed back in the third period, outscoring GHS 21-7 to force a 35-35 tie.
The Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to regain command.
Logan Pate broke loose for a 70-yard scoring run to make it 42-35. Cooper Davidson followed by intercepting a pass and returning it for a TD.
Senior quarterback Zak Burnett delivered another impressive performance, completing 22-of-34 passes for a Guntersville single-game record 362 yards. He had touchdown throws of 5 yards to Jack Harris and 74 yards to Campbell Leach.
Leach had five receptions for 143 yards, and Harris caught eight passes for 101 yards. Davidson hauled in seven passes for 97 yards, and Brandon Fussell caught two for 21 yards.
Pate led the Wildcats’ rushing attack with 11 carries for 103 yards and two scores.
Jerrell Williamson had 15 rushes for 39 yards and two TDs, and Burnett ran six times for 39 yards.
