This is an opinion piece.

It’s that time of year again — the “it’s a new year and a new me” time. But, not for this lady.

Looking ahead to 2020, I’m planning to just keep being my lovely, stubborn and sometimes a bit bossy self. I might try to eat a little bit healthier and get some exercise, but mostly, I’m going to stay exactly the same. I’m going to continue to work just as hard as I always have and appreciate my job. I’ll continue to love and cherish my friends and family. Most importantly, my faith in God will stay strong. What else do I need? Nothing. Well, maybe a puppy or two would be nice.

In the upcoming year, I plan to enjoy that I am at the point in my life where I’m finally happy just being me. What a relief to no longer be in that youngster frame of mind — you know the “I hope they think I’m cool!” and “I’m worried they might laugh at me!” and “What if I make a mistake?” always second-guessing oneself type of thinking. Thankfully, all of that rigmarole is gone forever.

I’m not planning to be a cantankerous, old battle axe or anything. But, I’m not trying to settle for anything less than what I deserve, nor am I going to alter my personality to fit someone else’s idea of a woman. I am liberated from the constraints of the opinions and judgements of other people. I’m setting myself free from that burden. And, I must say it feels amazing.

In 2020, I hope that everyone — no matter how fat you think you are or how much you think you need another person to be happy — can find the love, happiness and peace within themselves. Trust that you are significant, worth knowing, beautiful just as you are and important enough to be put first. Be willing to love and respect yourself, and make sure to share that positivity with the people around you.

Also — if you get some free time — eat some veggies, drink some water, read a book, take a walk outside to appreciate good ol’ Mother Nature, say something nice for no reason, call your parents and don’t ever pass up a chance to eat a bit of chocolate.

See, I told you I’d stay bossy!

Wishing you all a safe and happy New Year!
