The Boaz Pirates picked up their first win of the season and set a new school scoring record with a 72-0 shutout against Douglas in the Class 5A, Region 6 opener for both teams.
The Pirates led 21-0 after one quarter and 58-0 at the half.
Six Pirates scored touchdowns against the Eagles.
Quarterback Easton Hardin completed 5-of-6 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Hardin threw scoring passes of 28 yards to Carson Chamblee and 29 yards to Alex Hutchens. Hutchens also added a 6-yard touchdown run while Hardin had a 40-yard touchdown run.
Eli Jacobs had scoring runs of 26 and 51 yards.
Kadin Bennefield scored on runs of 7 and 3 yards.
In the third quarter, Mathias Roberts returned a fumble 30 yards for a score. Carter Lambert later added a 15-yard touchdown run to break the program’s scoring record. Fernando Martinez finished the game 10-of-10 on extra point kicks.
The Pirate defense also added a safety and forced three fumbles.
Offensively Boaz rolled up 373 total yards while the defense held the Eagles to 27 total yards and four first downs.
Boaz improves to 1-2 (1-0 in region play) on the season while Douglas drops to 0-2 (0-1).
Both teams remain in region play next week as Boaz travels to Alexandria and Douglas hosts Crossville.
