FYFFE — No. 2 Fyffe won a second straight boys Class 2A, Area 15 basketball tournament championship by upending No. 4 North Sand Mountain 71-66 on Friday night at Mike Cochran Gymnasium.
The Red Devils improved to 30-2 on the season, reaching the 30-win mark for the first time in Fyffe boys basketball history.
The rivals battled on equal terms throughout the night. NSM (19-8) led 19-18 and 36-33 at the first-half rest stops. The matchup was tied 50-50 at the third-quarter break.
“Our guys fought hard,” Fyffe head coach Neal Thrash said. “Give credit to Coach [Cole] Hicks and North Sand Mountain. They played our tails off.
“Not all our boys had their best game, but others stepped up. It was a big win.”
Parker Godwin scored 20 points, leading a trio of Red Devils in double figures. Austin Buster netted 19 and Brody Dalton 13.
Tate Goolesby cleared nine rebounds and Micah Johnson six. Godwin dished out six assists.
Derek Bearden and Luke Maples both scored 20 for North Sand Mountain. Russ Marr closed with 16.
The Red Devils host Asbury on Tuesday night at 7 in the subregional playoffs.
