Two men were recently caught stealing a lawn mower from Weathers Hardware on surveillance footage. After nearly two weeks of investigating, the Boaz Police Department found and arrested one of the suspects.
Video surveillance showed two men loading a 46-inch Husqvarna riding mower into the bed of a pickup truck around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 24, Boaz Police Chief Josh Gaskin said. After the video was posted to the Boaz Police Department Facebook page and information was released to other officers and surrounding agencies, Gaskin said dispatcher Thomas McCallie dissected the video and gathered enough information to locate the suspects’ vehicle and one of the suspects online. Chief Investigator Michael Abercrombie followed up and confirmed the suspect and the suspects’ vehicle. Gaskin said the suspect was spoken with over the phone. He admitted to the theft and said he sold the lawnmower, Gaskin said.
Jason Curtis Stephens, 38, of Altoona was later arrested and charged with theft after an investigator with the Etowah County District Attorneys Office saw the suspect and his vehicle, according to Gaskin. Bond was set at $10,000, but Stephens made bail, Gaskin said.
The lawn mower was recovered and returned to Weathers. Investigators are still working to identify the other suspect(s).
Stephens is also a suspect in other lawn equipment thefts in Marshall and Etowah counties.
As of Thursday, Gaskin said the second suspect’s location remains unknown.
